Crack propagation across an adhesive interlayer in flexural loading

چکیده
Crack propagation across interlayers separating adjoining brittle plates in flexure was studied using a model glass/epoxy/glass system. A transverse starter crack in the center glass plate was made to propagate to the nearest epoxy interface, where it arrested. System failure occurred at some higher load by crack reinitiation from pre-existing flaws in the adjoining glass surface, not by continuous penetration through the epoxy. A fracture mechanics analysis was developed to elucidate the role of material and geometrical variables. Published by Elsevier Ltd. on behalf of Acta Materialia Inc.

Crack Path Selection in Adhesively Bonded Joints: the Role of Material Properties
This paper investigates the role of material properties on crack path selection in adhesively bonded joints. First, a parametric study of directionally unstable crack propagation in adhesively bonded double cantilever beam specimens (DCB) is presented. The alternating crack trajectories in specimens of various material systems are simulated using the finite element method and the results indica...
متن کاملPredicting Depth and Path of Subsurface Crack Propagation at Gear Tooth Flank under Cyclic Contact Loading
In this paper, a two-dimensional computational model is proposed for predicting the initiation position and propagation path of subsurface crack of spur gear tooth flank. In order to simulate the contact of teeth, an equivalent model of two contacting cylinders is used. The problem is assumed to be under linear elastic fracture mechanic conditions and finite element method is used for numerical...
متن کاملTransverse fracture in multilayers from tension and line-wedge indentation
Crack propagation across laminated brittle solids from uniaxial tension or line-wedge loading is studied in real time using a model glass/epoxy architecture. The fracture progresses from one layer to the next via reinitiation from pre-existing flaws on the glass surfaces ahead of the primary crack in a process accompanied by some penetration through the interlayer but generally little or no del...
متن کاملDamage Evolution in Composite Bonded Joints under Fatigue Loading
The fatigue behaviour of single lap bonded joints under fatigue loading was already investigated and a suitable life prediction model was presented and validated [1-2]. The model is based on the actual damage evolution under fatigue load: a crack initiation followed by its propagation up to a critical length [2, 3]. In the present paper the evolution of fatigue damage in single lap joints is ex...
متن کاملBehaviour and strength of FRP-strengthened RC structures: a state-of-the-art review
A large wall with vertical cracks at mid-span, varying in width of up to 3 mm wide, had been declared capable of resisting a postulated seismic load. It was not straightforward to subsequently confirm, analytically, what influence the crack had on the wall’s capacity for lateral loading. It was assumed that it was likely that the horizontal reinforcement had yielded across the crack and thus th...
